Macquarie University
Mountaineering Society, Speleological Investigation Group, Caving
Group (MMS, MUSIG, MUCG) Macquarie University hosted many a SpeleoSports event and in its heyday had an active Mountaineering Club and Speleological Group. The Mountaineering Club suffered from the usual Australian problem of having no real mountains to climb, but that didn't stop anyone from trying! The Mountaineering Society (MMS) was formed in 1967 by Harry Luxford and Ric Daniel. The Macquarie University Speleological Investigation Group (MUSIG) formed as a branch of MMS in 1972, before finally becoming its own entity in 1976. "MUSIG" became "MUCG" in 1982 and under this name the club survived into the late 1990's before, like a number of University clubs in operation at the time, it was finally wound up. MUCG was a member of the ASF. MMS produced a periodical newsletter called "Sloth". MUSIG's "Quaver, Notes from MUSIG" morphed into MUCG's "Raker" due to the fineries of English pronunciation. MUCQ also had a short newsletter "Wotzon". The ASF Library holdings below are by no means a comprehensive list of what was produced and we would welcome additions/corrections to this information.
