The Central Queensland Speleological Society formed in
1967 and was a full and active member of the ASF. Peter Berrill was President
for 30 years after stepping into the role in 1986. The Society is well known for its central role in the epic battle to save the Mt Etna Caves, a
struggle lasting from 1962 to 1999. The CQSS did an amazing job in discovering
and documenting a large number of caves across a hot and thickly vegetated
landscape. Several CQSS members are still active in the area.
The ASF Library holds an incomplete set of
three journal publications from CQSS: "The
Explorer", which started in 1970, an "Information Sheet" which ran
from 1983 to 1986 - this Information Sheet became the "Newsletter"
in 1986. The last issue held by the ASF Library dates from 1999.
