The University of Queensland Speleological Society (UQSS)
started in 1960 and were very active during the 1970s and 1980s. They had a focus on the science,
mapping and conservation of caves. They joined the campaign led by
CQSS in the
battle to save Mt Etna near Rockhampton from being destroyed by mining, but also
played a major role in building a case against the Pike Creek (Glenlyon) Dam in
South East Queensland. The dam was eventually built, flooding the Texas Caves in
the process. Sadly, UQSS
ceased operating around 1989-90. Many of their publications and the contents of
their library came
to be archived in the ASF Library, except for a small amount of material that is
held in the Fryer Library at the University of Queensland.
The main periodical publication
of UQSS was "Downunder." The ASF Library holds issues from August
1962 to November 1986. There are also 2 issues of a Circular, and
5 issues of a Bulletin produced during 1967-1968. Copyright is retained by the original
authors. Access to these journals requires ASF membership and no
